Multi-Disciplinary artist, born in London.
Refining a visually conceptual vocabulary, developing the notion of what can be seen as performance space.
I have always been fascinated with the structure of light and how it can be viewed as a kind of architecture.
Specifically the collage of shadow– a photogram of each exposure giving rise to a unique print, analogous
to painting, not a mass-produced image. This fascination continued into my BA. I expanded my interest
by using the elements of performance within the darkroom, distinguishing this kinetic approach using
the term ‘Performergram’. A development of this idea suggested itself, wherein performance takes place
on top of the photographic paper while exposing: Sound is converted into patterns of light, which are
then painted onto the light-sensitive photographic paper and developed. Recently I have produced a new
series of Performergrams – ‘Sound Landscapes of London Town.’ These images have developed into
abstract time capsules, exploring the initial perception of sense.
Performance has become a force of nature within my practice. I found the potential for live art to reach a
variety of different audiences. I have utilized a cross-section of performance techniques, employing
cross-dressed-based narrative shows channeling political satire. My dissertation was entitled ‘The Silent
Spectacle: Looking at Cabaret through the light of the fine art world’. The focus was using one’s own body
as a camera, developing a narrative shard through painting with movement. In doing this I investigated
whether the use of performance as a tool, and cabaret as a medium, could legitimately be integrated into
more traditional artistic practice. My passion for using light as a medium continued in the cabaret
performances, creating light-based costumes and installations.
It was a natural progression to move into using performance in digital holography. In 2013 a
collaboration was initiated with Isabel Azevedo. Using a Holocam Rail system we produced a series of
performance-based digital holograms, holding movement within themselves. The intention: is not to
solely create a visual document to preserve what happened in a particular moment in space and time,
but to animate the space between the image and the viewer. Enabling the audience to colonize that
space and create their unique experience of the captured moment in real space and real time.
I am seeking to explore the potential direction of applying this language driven by the abstract movement
and light-based work. I wish to discover this using different media and approaches to applied technic.
Now is the right time to work on these skills, employing them in drawing and photography.
